HMS Capel (K470) Areas With Asbestos Exposure

HMS Capel (K470)

The HMS Capel (K470) was an Evarts-class destroyer escort originally laid down on March 11, 1943, as USS Wintle DE-266 and launched on April 22, the same year. It was transferred to the United Kingdom and served there for one year as HMS Capel K470 until it was sunk by a torpedo on December 26, 1944. During its activities, the ship carried a complement of 156 people on board.

Since asbestos was present on the HMS Capel (K470), it is probable you were inevitably exposed to asbestos on a daily basis. Boiler and engine rooms aboard naval vessels and other places located below the deck typically had poor ventilation. Inhaling fibers from the application and removal of asbestos-containing materials placed service members at risk of developing serious health problems, such as lung cancer, asbestosis, bronchial cancer, and mesothelioma.

Everyone who served on the HMS Capel (K470) inhaled the asbestos fibers and is at risk for developing lung disease
