The SS Atchinson Victory was laid down on February 17, 1944, and launched on April 22, the same year, by the California Shipbuilding Company. This ship belonged to the Victory ships class. She had the U.S. Maritime Commission designation VC2-S-AP3, with the hull number 11 (MCV-11, V11). The SS Atchinson Victory was deployed during the Navy’s World War II operations in the Pacific Ocean. In her first mission in the Pacific, the SS Atchinson Victory served at Pearl Harbor. The ship’s complement included 28 US Naval Armed Guards and 62 Merchant Marines. After the war in 1946, the SS Atchinson Victory was bought by the Furness Withy. In 1963, the ship was purchased by the Salvador Investment Company. In 1964, it was scrapped at Castellón de la Plana. US Navy ships, including this one, were built using asbestos-containing materials. Asbestos particles are airborne. Anyone working aboard the ship, but most importantly below deck, where massive amounts of asbestos were present, could easily breathe in this toxic substance. Once asbestos gets into the lungs, it can trigger serious lung diseases such as cancer and asbestosis. Those who worked aboard the SS Atchinson Victory and developed an asbestos-related illness are entitled to compensation.
