After shakedown, the vessel joined SubRon 4 and departed for the Mediterranean Sea to participate in numerous exercises with the 6th Fleet and NATO countries. She received the Navy Unit Commendation the following year and was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation for her duty in 1967. The ship underwent an extended overhaul and became a Submarine Squadron TEN member in 1970. In 1972, the submarine completed the first six-month Mediterranean deployment for an SSN. She underwent modernization and overhaul in 1984 and an intensive Selective Restricted Availability in 1985. From 1989 until 1990, the vessel conducted intensive operations supporting the National Defense, including deployments to the Western Pacific and visits to Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. The submarine was decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in 1991.
