Laid down by Newport News Shipbuilding in 1975, the USS Carl Vinson is the third ship belonging to the Nimitz-class and is a supercarrier. It participated in Operation Desert Strike, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Southern Watch. The USS Carl Vinson is the recipient of numerous awards, among which the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. It is worthy of note that the body of Osama bin Laden was buried at sea in 2011 from the deck of this ship. Asbestos exposure occurred on the USS Carl Vinson to a great extent, as the mineral, which is highly carcinogenic is present in large amounts aboard the ship. Therefore, everyone who served aboard this ship must keep a close eye on their health, as their risk of developing awful diseases such as lung cancer is very high. Currently, the USS Carl Vinson is in active service.
