Laid down by Charleston Navy Yard in 1939, the USS Swanson was a Gleaves-class destroyer of the U.S. Navy. It was sponsored by Mrs. Claude A. Swanson, the widow of Secretary Swanson, and commissioned 2 years later with Lieutenant Commander M. P. Kingsley in command. By virtue of its extraordinary service during World War II, the USS Swanson earned 8 battle stars. The ship was also awarded the Navy Occupation Service Medal.
