Founded 150 years ago, Brooklyn Navy Shipyard was one of the main places where important aircraft carriers and battleships were built during the last century. The shipyard had 70,000 employees during World War II, which speaks volumes about how renowned it was. In 1996, Brooklyn Navy Shipyard was decommissioned by the U.S. Navy. Regrettably, between the 1920s and the 1980s, people who were working for this shipyard were heavily exposed to asbestos, as the mineral was extensively used in the construction of military vessels. A whopping 3.5 shipyard workers were heavily exposed to asbestos on the job during the last century, which means that many of the people who are suffering today from terrible diseases are former shipyard workers.
