Owned by General Dynamics Corporation, the shipyard was founded in 1883, and it began operating in Braintree and subsequently moved location to Quincy Point, Massachusetts. In 1913, it was acquired by Bethlehem Steel and later transferred to Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation. Afterward, it was sold to General Dynamics and eventually closed in 1986. During its operation, workers constructed hundreds of ships for both military and civilian clients. However, every employee was exposed to asbestos, as the mineral was crucial for shipbuilding during the last century. Without wearing protective gear such as respirators, the workers of Fore River Shipyard would inhale and ingest toxic dust constantly. If you are a former employee, look out for lung disease.
