Situated in Lake Superior, Wisconsin, the shipyard has been operating for over 130 years. The dry dock instantly became the first one built there and the largest dry dock on the Great Lakes. During the peak of the company, it was building as many as 10 vessels simultaneously. Sadly, Fraser Shipyards, Inc. was one of the hundreds of companies in this industry that exposed workers to asbestos. Because the mineral has numerous convenient properties, such as fire and chemical corrosion resistance, it was the go-to material for shipyards. 1 in 500 shipyard workers was responsible for insulating, a dangerous process, as it would create a lot of asbestos dust the workers would unavoidably inhale.
