As a premier shipbuilder along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Halter Marine Shipyard built a wide variety of ocean-going vessels such as oil recovery vessels, oil cargo vessels, patrol vessels, and logistic support vessels. Those in charge of shipyard work at Halter Marine Shipyard were the most exposed to asbestos since they were directly handling asbestos-based insulation that lined the whole structure of every Navy vessel manufactured in the mid-20th century. Shipyard workers were not given any warning, training, or respiratory protective gear when handling, installing, loading, repairing, or removing asbestos-containing products. Asbestos exposure may cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis, pleural plaques, and pleural effusion, among other conditions.
