Located in Pascagoula, Mississippi, this shipyard was built in 1938 and is currently part of the Huntington Ingalls Industries. It remains a leading manufacturer of ships in the country, having approximately 12,500 employees at the moment. Regrettably, during the last century, Ingalls Shipbuilding heavily exposed workers to asbestos. The shipyard is renowned for having built numerous military vessels during the last century, such as Sturgeon-class submarines. By far, the most popular asbestos product on shipyards was insulation, which took many forms, from boiler insulation to pipe insulation. A common way in which shipyard workers would be exposed to asbestos was when they had to cut and sand various building materials to fit perfectly in the vessels.
