Asbestos was an ideal material for use in shipbuilding since it withstands corrosion and high heat. Between the 1930s to mid-1970s, the hazardous mineral was employed in practically every aspect of shipbuilding in the United States Navy, exposing a significant number of naval shipyard employees to the cancer-causing substance on a regular basis.
