Leevac Shipyard, like the majority of other shipyards that were in operation prior to the 1980s, frequently used asbestos in its ships, equipment, and products. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, several million civilian employees in Navy shipyards were exposed to asbestos, which was widely utilized in military shipbuilding. It is estimated that almost 300 asbestos-containing products were utilized in the construction of these ships. Pipe insulation was one of the most often seen applications. Its popularity was attributed to the fact that it is highly resistant to heat. Anyone who worked at this shipyard should be alert for indications of asbestos-related disorders and visit a physician promptly if they feel shortness of breath, or chest pain.
