Mayport Naval Shipyard Areas With Asbestos Exposure

Between World War II and the late-1970s, shipyard workers were at a disproportionately high risk of asbestos exposure due to its extensive use and a shortage of respiratory protective equipment. Mayport Naval Shipyard was no exception. Many of its workers have developed asbestos-related respiratory conditions and cancer. Navy veterans stationed on ships constructed by this shipyard were also exposed to asbestos and have developed asbestos-related diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, or lung cancer. Former shipyard employees who exhibit symptoms such as difficulty breathing, persistent coughing, and/or weight loss, should see a physician promptly. Treatment choices dwindle as the disease progresses, which is why an early diagnosis is important.
