Located in Oakland, California, Moor Dry Dock Company was a ship repair and shipbuilding company. It was founded in 1905 and underwent multiple name changes over the years. The shipyard ceased operations in 1961. Moore Dry Dock Company was known for employing several thousand African Americans, both skilled and unskilled, at a time when they were facing major job discrimination. Sadly, as it was happening at shipyards all over the country, people who worked at Moore Dry Dock Company were exposed to asbestos occupationally. Asbestos exposure occurs by inhaling and ingesting airborne fibers, and insulation was one of the main products exposure would stem from. If you were employed at this shipyard, keep a close eye on your respiratory health.
