Situated in the city of South Portland, Maine, the shipyard was built as two separate entities - Todd-Bath Iron Shipbuilding Corporation and South Portland Shipbuilding Corporation. They were founded in 1940 and 1941, respectively. The primary goal of the New England Shipbuilding Corporation was to meet the demand created by World War II. Roughly 266 ships were constructed by the East Yard and the West Yard. The first 30 East Yard ships were Ocean class cargo ships built for the United Kingdom, and the remaining ones were Liberty ships for the United States Maritime Commission.
