Located in Mobile County, Alabama, Ocala Shipyard was one of the numerous that exposed workers to asbestos between the 1940s and mid-70s. Prior to the 1980s, the shipbuilding industry was a significant consumer of asbestos in its construction. Due to the fact that asbestos was found to be thermally inert - that is, it did not burn and could tolerate very high temperatures without combusting - it was utilized in hundreds of different applications aboard military ships, including fireproofing, pipelines and pumps, boilers, and condensers, evaporators, distillers and turbines. Inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause scar tissue to form and thicken, which can result in shortness of breath, difficulty participating in physical activity, coughing, and chest discomfort.
