Located in Savannah, Georgia, this shipyard is mostly known for building Liberty ships during World War II. Southeastern Shipbuilding Corporation was founded in 1942, and it closed in 1945. However, during this short period, it had over 42,000 employees. The health of these people was put at risk every single day, as they would be exposed to high air concentrations of asbestos dust. Asbestos would lurk in over 300 products aboard military ships during the last century, so workers had to handle these products when constructing Liberty ships. Exposure to asbestos occurs by inhalation and ingestion and can lead to life-threatening, debilitating health problems such as lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma within 20 to 50 years of the first exposure.
