As a subsidiary of General Dynamics Corporation, the shipyard has been the main manufacturer of military vessels for the U.S. Navy for over a century. It was founded in 1899 and was headquartered in Groton, Connecticut. General Dynamics Electric Boat built 74 submarines during World War II, and the company ranked 77th among American corporations in the value of military production contracts. Sadly, all of the employees of the shipyard were exposed to asbestos on the job daily, as the mineral was fundamental for shipbuilding. They would mostly inhale and ingest asbestos dust when handling or disturbing asbestos products such as insulation. Because asbestos exposure is associated with lung disease that can be fatal, we advise former workers to get regular screenings.
