Todd Shipyards was founded in 1916, and before it became a corporation was called Los Angeles Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company and Todd Shipyards, Los Angeles Division. The Los Angeles location was abundant in asbestos as it built and repaired destroyers and frigates for the Navy. Construction crews, welders, and other employees were exposed to asbestos in significant doses. Insulation was made with asbestos-containing materials used to protect the systems against overheating and fire damage. Asbestos was the main ingredient in gaskets and epoxies used to hold together crucial components. After its acquisition in 2011, Vigor Shipyards is the current entity operating the former Todd Shipyards.
